Growing to read: reading to grow.

The role of stories in the growth and development of the Oxford Reading Tree

The title of this presentation is taken from the old, English proverb ‘From little acorns, mighty oaks grow.’ It suggests that successful enterprises often start from modest beginnings. The Oxford Reading Tree, which began with 24 storybooks, has grown into a literacy programme with over 950 books and is sold in 130 countries worldwide. It is estimated to have taught over 30 million children to read. At the heart of the Oxford Reading Tree are the Biff, Chip and Kipper stories.

In this light-hearted session, Rod and Alex describe how their unique 35-year working relationship has been behind the Oxford Reading Tree’s success. They will demonstrate how they work together to ensure that the text and illustrations of the stories are closely linked. Beginning with the process Rod goes through to visualise and write his story, they will then replicate a working session where Alex draws the first sketches and later, stage by stage, creates the finished artwork which illustrate the stories.   

In their demonstration Rod and Alex will include a little of the history of the Oxford Reading Tree and give delegates a flavour of the humour and fun which underpins the 650 stories they have worked on together.
